OpenTelemetry in 2023 - by Kevin Lin - Bit by Bit

OpenTelemetry (OTEL) started in 2019 as a merger of OpenTracing and OpenCensus, expanding beyond tracing to cover all of observability. OTEL has provided a stable standard for observability pillars, a telemetry collector, and SDKs for code instrumentation. Today, OTEL is the second most active project in the CNCF, with universal adoption among observability providers. This post provides an overview of OTELs current state, its various projects, and its future goals.
