This article describes the Architecture Modernization Enabling Team (AMET), a pattern observed and applied in multi-team-scope architecture modernization initiatives. AMET is a type of architecture enabling team that coordinates and upskills all teams and stakeholders in the modernization initiative. Effective AMETs have six primary purposes that address six recurrent modernization challenges. Architecture modernization is necessary when architecture inhibits strategic business objectives. In these scenarios, an AMET is likely to be a vital investment due to the previously outlined challenges. The architecture becomes easier and cheaper to change, enabling faster flow, and reducing technical debt, fragility and security concerns.
