Alan Turing Institutes Failure in Developing Modern AI in the UK

The Alan Turing Institute and the AI council have failed to acknowledge the importance of large language models (LLMs) in the development of modern AI in the UK. Despite its flagship status, the institute has been completely blindsided by recent breakthroughs in AI with no mention of LLMs in its last four annual reports. Instead, it has focused on less impactful topics such as Non-fungible tokens and digital colonialism. The Royal Statistical Society has long argued that LLMs are the most pressing issue in AI. The UK needs to support open source projects in AI like BLOOM, which received funding from the French government. Without investment in such projects, the UK will lag behind other countries in the development of modern AI.
