Microsoft introduces Open Service Mesh for Kubernetes, plans quick donation to CNCF

Microsoft has introduced a new open source project, Open Service Mesh (OSM), to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). OSM is a lightweight and extensible service mesh that runs on Kubernetes and uses Envoy for its proxy and communication bus. It is designed to be a reference implementation for Service Mesh Interface (SMI) and allows users to bail out to the raw Envoy xDS APIs if SMI does not fit their needs. Microsofts Gabe Monroy said the combination of OSMs features hits the sweet spot for customers. The company has started the process to donate OSM to CNCF after problems arose with donations of similar projects such as Istio.
